ASHLEIGH

“I can’t believe we’re seniors. It’s our last fall semester,” Emma says as we get home from the bookstore.

“Did you just squeal?” I tease her. Her voice always goes up two octaves when she’s excited. It’s adorable and endearing, coming from her tiny five-foot-four frame. Emma is petite, a hundred pounds soaking wet. What she lacks in stature, she makes up for in energy. She may be small, but she’s mighty.

“You know I did. Now stop picking on me, and let’s have a fun girl's night before our first day of class.” She lights scented candles, pulls a box out of the hall closet, and tosses it at me. It’s beautifully wrapped with a big red bow.

“What’s this?”

“Open it and see.” She claps her hands together and bounces. “I was home when they were delivered. I got one too. I already opened mine. Go ahead.”

I slide the ribbon off the box and open it. It’s full of scented tissue paper and the most luxurious bathrobe I’ve ever seen. It’s soft, fluffy, and the most fantastic fabric ever made. I put it on, and it feels like being snuggled by one hundred of the softest kittens. Something falls out onto the table. I pick it up to find a note in a familiar scrawl.

I know you’re still mad at me. I’m sorry. Ash, I need you to be happy. Enjoy girl's night. I know that’s a Jules thing with you, but I wanted you to know I’m here for you too. Love you.
